What shots are required?
We require DHLPP (the regular annual vaccine) & Bordatella ("kennel cough") Rabies is optional. OR you may get a titer test done (a blood test to test the dog's immune defenses to avoid vaccinating annually) Proof of either is required. Bordatella must be given at least 4 days prior to boarding as dogs can contract the virus from the vaccine and then will not be allowed to board.
Why do we require that dogs must be on leash when checking in or out?
For several reasons, we take great pride in our place and the hard work we have done to build our dog facility from scratch (started off as a hay field & an old barn!) so we don't want dogs peeing all over our shop, the plants, the fencing & the potted plants. And for your dog's safety. Mays Road is a busy road so you would not want your dog to take off on you and go up to the road. Our parking lot is also very busy! We have people that may be elderly or very young that could get injured if your dog bounces up to them exuberantly. And lastly, loose dogs can set off our usually calm daycare pack. Many loose dogs are fairly rude when they run up to greet dogs behind the fence. This is not fair to the daycare dogs or our hard work in keeping them stable! We also have a cat & a goat that are easy targets for a loose dog. We would be VERY upset if our beloved pets were put into harms way due to not having a leashed dog. We appreciate your cooperation.
What is the check in procedure?
When checking in please leave your dog in the car. Bring in your paperwork (the General Info form, the Vet release form & the Policies) & your dog's vaccination records. We will review the paperwork & photocopy the records. We will also fill out a boarding check-in sheet to ensure we have your dog's feeding schedule & daily habits. We will then ask that you bring the dog in. We will change his collar (we use our own collar with our own ID) Your leash/collar will be handed back to you (it is difficult to keep track of so many) We will then ask you to leave while we keep your dog inside and out of sight of you driving away (this can create stress & they may associate that fence line with your leaving) Dogs can also act much differently with you present when meeting new dogs.
Why is a daycare/boarding trial required?
A trial is required to ensure the safety of the dogs that come to Cedar Ridge (and our safety too!) We assess the dogs to make sure they are not aggressive towards other dogs, people, food or toy possessive. We want to see how they do without YOU present (dogs tend to change a lot without their owners present) We cannot tolerate fence climbing, fence pulling (or any other escape attempts), mounting ("humping"), excessive barking/whining, running from strangers etc The reason we have so many high expectations of the dogs that come to Cedar Ridge is for the welfare of our doggie clients. We want to create a stress free manner for everyone.
Why is there a trial fee?
The trial fee applies due to the extra care and time required to integrate your dog into our boarding setting. We don't enjoy "failing" dogs so we try our very best to get your dog to see what is so great about staying at Cedar Ridge!
Where do the dogs sleep at night?
The dogs stay in crates at night. We have two different styles: Vari kennel (the large plastic crates) or Wire mesh (large open wire on all sides) They use the same crate through out their stay, and enjoy their crate as their own private space.
We are in the process of building a new facility. The new facility will consist of solid kennels with steel gates.
Why do you crate the dogs?
We crate them for their safety. Boarding dogs cannot mingle in a large pack unattended. This could lead to disaster. We have also tried some dogs out & about at night in our building and have had drywall & doors scratched up. We would also not want your pup to ingest anything they are not supposed to.
What if my dog isn't used to a crate or doesn't like being crated?
The ideal for us and for the dog is that they are used to a crate but not all dogs have been crate trained. We show the dog that the crate is the only place they will be fed their meals & treats so generally they start to see the good in it. If your dog is extremely stressed (ie excessive drooling, whining, barking or any panic behaviour) he will be sent home. There is no point in the dog being that overwhelmed.
What do the boarding dogs do during the day?
The boarding dogs follow the same routine as the daycare dogs. They all go out together to run & play in the open pens. We separate into "matched" groups of dogs that get along well. They are outside for about 9 hours. The boarders then come in at dinner time for their meal and a rest. Then they get a night time potty break & play for about an hour late in the evening.
How big are the pens that the dogs use?
The pens are half an acre each. We generally separate 10 dogs per pen. The pens are half grass, half forest for a nice outdoorsy feel with lots of shade and tons of room to RUN!
Won't my dog be too tired running around ALL day?
We have found that the dogs do not need a set nap time. Dogs are very smart and know when to regulate themselves. They have a morning hard play and run together, then a rest (where they lay scattered in the field) and then play again. This pattern goes on all day. People don't give their dog's enough credit!
What happens if it rains or snows?
We are constructing a NEW indoor facility to eliminate this problem but in the meantime: There are shelters out in the pens. The dogs have the choice of using them. If it pours everyone will come inside & will be crated until it lets up a little. We make every effort to keep your dog comfortable. Most dogs do not notice the rain and continue to play but their well being comes first (if they are cold or getting too wet they come inside!) Same goes for snow, although when the dogs are in play mode they LOVE snow!
What happens on really hot days?
On hot days we put out kiddie pools. On really hot days we play with the hose, if the dog wants to play in the water they do. If you do not want a wet dog back please let us know! We are also making sure everyone is drinking enough and pay attention to their activity level.
Do you provide dog toys? Can we bring our own toys and personal belongings?
No. Toys, especially from home, can cause fights. We want to minimize any potential aggressive behaviour. The dogs have each other as entertainment. We do provide dishes & blankets. If you would like to bring your dog a blanket for his crate but please make it a lightweight washable blankie. Also be aware that your dog may be destructive away from you and we will not be responsible for damaged items.
What about feeding?
We can feed your dog twice a day if needed (breakfast & dinner) You MUST bring your own food (switching food abruptly can cause stomach upset & diarrhea) Please bring your dog's food premeasured in ziploc bags, in a large bucket or in its original bag. Please label it with the dog's name & feed schedule. No grocery plastic bags. We will also accommodate feeding a raw or special diet as we feed our own dogs raw & we have a fridge/freezer for storage. Please label well.
What is your cancellation policy?
24 hours notice except for holidays. Please endeavor to let us know as soon as your plans change – space is limited! During holidays, we do require a 50% deposit or $50 (sorry, this is non-refundable) There is also a 14 day cancellation policy at Christmas time.
What is the minimum age to board?
4 months is minimum. They must have their shots done and to be fair to a puppy being boarded can be overwhelming. They should be eased into it with an hour here and there of daycare first, gradually building up to an overnight.
How long can my dog board for? Do you discount for long-term boarding?
You can board your dog for any length of time needed as long as your dog is doing well here, is stress free and not causing any problems (behavioural) You must always leave us with an emergency contact of someone who is willing to take the dog for us if he is not doing well here. Most dogs absolutely love it here but others stress over where their "people" are. Every 14th day is free. 30 day+ visits must be prepaid and we must have a credit card on file so that we can charge the boarding expense every 30 days.
Quick Reference Boarding Checklist:
